ABA – American Bodybuilding Association, 1989-

The ABA was founded in California by Denny Kakos, Pete Samra and Wally Boyko. Kakos promoted with the National Physique Committee (NPC) prior to forming the ABA. Samra operated the Christian Bodybuilding Association (CBA) from 1980-1982. The federation started out as a one-year drug-free organization. It later offered a variety specified duration competitions (3-years, 5-years, lifetime drug-free). The federation used a variety of drug screening methods. Some events used polygraph screening, some urinalysis, some both. Samra’s and Boyko’s involvement ceased and Kakos assumed the sole leadership of the federation. Kakos formed the International Natural Bodybuilding Association (INBA) in 1997. The ABA and INBA are synonymous present day (see INBA history for post-1997 information). The Natural Universe was established as the federation's top title up through 1997. The Natural Olympia would serve as the top title from 1998 on. The ABA/INBA served as an amateur affiliate to the Professional Natural Bodybuilding Association (PNBA) when Kakos formed it.
