NABF - North American Bodybuilding Federation, 1995-2003

The NABF was founded in 1995 by Al Thurston of Rhode Island. It used urine testing as its means of screening for drug use. Steele Jungle Publications publisher Max Furek promoted contests with the NABF and pushed the federation through that publication until after the 1999 season. The organization peaked in size in 1998 when it conducted 28 competitions and was active in 15 states. Over the course of its existence it held shows in CT, FL, MA, MD, ME, MI, NC, NH, NJ, NY, PA, OH, RI, VA, VT and WV. Its top title was named the North American Nationals. The organization began offering pro divisions in 1997.
