NABF - North
American Bodybuilding Federation, 1995-2003
The NABF was founded
in 1995 by Al
Thurston of Rhode Island. It used urine
testing as its means of screening for drug use.
Steele Jungle
Publications publisher Max Furek promoted
contests with the NABF and
pushed the federation
through that publication until after the 1999 season.
The organization peaked in size in 1998 when it
conducted 28 competitions and was active in 15
states. Over the course of its existence it held
shows in
CT, FL, MA,
MD, ME, MI, NC, NH, NJ, NY, PA, OH, RI,
VA, VT
and WV.
Its top title was named the North
American Nationals. The organization began offering
pro divisions in 1997.
