The NANBA was founded in 1984 by James (Jim) M. Evans of Minnesota. The federation operated under a one-year drug-free policy to start. Evans believed longer durations unduly punished those who had used steroids but wanted to break free and come clean. Polygraph exams and urinalysis were used by the NANBA as a means of screening for drug use. A top title was established for the organization in 1987 and was named the Natural Universe. Lee Graese took over for Jim Evans in 1990. At that time the NANBA had activity in 17 states and three foreign countries (Australia, Italy & Switzerland). The federation progressed to being five-years drug-free by 1993 (via two-years drug-free in 1990, three in 1991, four in 1992, five in 1993). The NANBA was an amateur affiliate of the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation (WNBF) from 1989 to 1991. In 1994 Wayne and Sharon Hammonds assumed chairperson responsibilities for the organization.  Patrick Edmond conducted events in LA and TX the final two years of the NANBA's existence (1998 & 1999).
