WNBF - World Natural Bodybuilding Federation,
1990-
The WNBF was
established as the first pro natural federation
in 1990 by Cheh N. Low, publisher of New York
based Natural Physique magazine (later
changed to Natural Bodybuilding &
Fitness). Steve
Downs was chosen to serve as Chairman. The
United States Natural Fitness Association (USNFA)
served as an amateur affiliate in 1990. The
North American Natural Bodybuilding Association
(NANBA) served as an amateur affiliate in 1990
and 1991. The American Bodybuilding Coordinating
Committee (ABCC) served as an amateur affiliate
from 1990 through 1994. The National Gym
Association (NGA) served as an amateur affiliate
from 1991 through 1999. The North American
Natural Bodybuilding Federation (NANBF) served
as an amateur affiliate starting in 1999. Cheh
Low established the International Natural
Bodybuilding Federation (INBF) in 2000, and it
served as an amateur affiliate starting then.
In the beginning the top three place winners in
each class of Open divisions became eligible to
compete in the WNBF at pro qualifiers. Special
invites to compete in WNBF events were also
extended early on, and eligibility was extended
to any female who ever won a regional or
national show to start. Starting in 1992 pro
qualifying events were changed so just class
winners of Open divisions qualified to compete
in WNBF events. In 1998 guidelines were changed
to extend eligibility to Open division overall
winners only, except for special cases, which
were referred to as super pro qualifiers – at
which Open division class winners became
eligible to compete in WNBF events.
A year-round drug-testing policy was implemented
in 1993. Drug-free duration guidelines changed
from five-years drug-free to seven years
starting in 1994. Polygraph screenings and urine
testing is utilized as the means of screening
for drug use as WNBF competitions. Pro Figure
was added starting in 2003.
